How to host a Halloween party

Every party has a formula, and every host has their own formula.  Here is mine, along with the inspiration for my Halloween party.  Enjoy!

Courtney's throwing a party (Halloween edition!)
stemuli + refreshments + a balanced guest list = success!

now that you have my formula and inspiration, let break it down.

Classic old movies (on mute) appropriate lighting (candles!) and a well curated soundtrack.  These are my favorites for Halloween:

1931 Dracula

Top 5 on my soundtrack
"Love Potion no.9" by The Searchers
"Witchcraft" by Ella Fitzgerald
"Thriller" by Michael Jackson
"Black Magic Woman" by Fleetwood Mac
"I Put a Spell on You" by Screamin' Jay Hawkins

{inspired by vanitas and Samhain}

cheeses, cured meats, nuts, pomegranates, persimmon, candied apples, oranges, dark chocolate, breads, and crackers
Signature cocktail: Harvest Moon (Bourbon, sparkling pomegranate juice, and peach liqueur stored over ice garnished with pomegranate seeds)
also... mulled apple cider (hot on the stove!) and red wine

A balanced guest list
{what goes into a balanced list}

  • being clear from the beginning who is invited (plus +1, or invite only)
  • consider the group- mixing work, spouses, and old friends means that there are several of each.  nothing is worse than being at a party where everyone works together except for you.
  • seating vs. standing- unless you a having a packed open house don't invite more people than you have places to sit.  Don't worry, floor pillows are acceptable!
